The inspiration to write the ebook and build this website followed my visit to the National Football Museum in May 2010. It was  based at Preston North End Football Club although it will be relocating  to Manchester and re-opening in 2012. The museum was originally opened  a decade ago  and has a vast collection of football memorabilia from Victorian times to the present day.

In my research  of 18 months I  revisited parts of history where the modern game had developed due, in some cases, to decisions made over 100 years ago. Players had world-wide reputations but did not earn the salary that modern day Premiership stars do today.

The headlines are now usually all about the Premiership but there is a bygone era, a rich history of the game before 1992. Our  father’s and grandfather’s would have witnessed players’ who were exceptionally gifted while others were characters who put their stamp on the game. We owe so much to that  generation as football may never have developed the way it has.

This eBook celebrates the lives of footballers and events from the past. An exciting match can last for years in the  memory. So my theory is that if you are excited about football as a child then it will remain with you as an adult. Football is one of the most successful institutions in these islands.  It has become  a multi billion pound industry and yet it still has the power to set the pulse racing in the veins of the ordinary supporter.

Soccer Heroes is all about nostalgia !  You can read and reminisce about the great British and Irish players' of days gone by.

The  images are with kind permission of  the National Football Museum when it was based in Preston. Those of the 1930s footballers on Topical Times cards are from my own private collection of football memorabilia built up over the last 50 years while one valuable item is a rare. A copy of the Athletic News Annual (1914-1915 season). In addition information collated from library archives I have match day programmes from the 1940s.

That means you now only need to read one publication:

"Soccer Heroes-from Victorian Times to the Premiership."

It is written in the style of a diary so pre-season starts in July, the Football League kicked off in August and FA Cup Finals’ were played in April and May. The World Cup and European Championships in June and July.

A copy  of Soccer Heroes , from Victorian times to the Premiership can be download now for  your Kindle or via a FREE APP for your computer via Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com. Go to the Kindle store on either website
